Founded in 1885 as one of the first girls' boarding schools in the country, Roedean provides an outstanding education for 400 day, full and weekly boarding girls from 11 to 18 years. The school's ethos: "looking outward, aiming high" is inspired by its stunning 40-acre setting overlooking the cliffs at Brighton across the English Channel.
Location Roedean is the only school in the UK to be sited within a National Park, on the coastline and within city boundaries. The location is unique. The school is in the countryside yet just a few minutes from one of England's most vibrant and creative coastal resorts. Brighton offers everything from Regency heritage to beaches, culture and year round festivals, to excellent shopping and restaurants.
The school is a five minute taxi ride from Brighton station and a 52 minute train journey from London Victoria station.
Outstanding Education Roedean girls discover the excitement of learning in the classroom, on the stage or sports field – supported by excellent teaching and outstanding specialist facilities. Alongside superb results, girls gain the skills, independence and self-assurance to enter world class universities and progress onto fulfilling careers.
Academic Excellence The School tops all others in Sussex for the new English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) introduced by the Department for Education in 2010 as a performance measure for students studying their GCSEs. Roedean saw 81 per cent of its pupils achieving this new benchmark for GCSE results last summer.
The strong Sixth Form offers an extensive range and combination of A and AS Levels covering 25 subjects to prepare students for university courses. Cambridge, UCL, King's and Bristol are amongst last year's UK university destinations; and further afield, Chicago (The University of Chicago), NYU (New York University) and San Francisco.
Weekly and 'flexi' boarding will be available from September 2012. Weekly boarding (five nights, from Sunday to Thursday) takes the pressure off busy parents and gives pupils more time for homework, friends and hobbies, while preserving quality family time at the weekend. Flexi boarding (two - four nights each week) is ideal for pupils with extra-curricular activities which finish late or start early, or a worry-free option for parents who regularly travel some distance for work. Weekly boarders will be accompanied by staff on the Friday night train back to London (Brighton to Victoria).
One of the UK's largest boarding house refurbishment programme commenced from March 2012 at Roedean, led by award-wining architects Buckley Gray Yeoman. The refurbishment project involved the major reconfiguration and redesign of over 200 bedrooms in addition to a number of communal spaces, which providing areas for socialising and private study.
